The General President's Message

The government of Afghanistan places high priority on the ongoing efforts to rebuild and strengthen macroeconomic management capacity. According, the central statistics offices is currently compiling statistics on national accounts, prices, external trade, population, demographics, etc. to be used for monitoring economic, financial, and structural policies as well as other operations.

The CSO President
The overall goal in producing Afghanistan Statistical Yearbook is to put relevant information about the economic and social development of Afghanistan at the disposal of policy -makers and the general public. The population is to provide a core set of data covering two development themes: people and economy.
The indicators have been selected according to what is generally required for economic planning and the statistical data that are currently available, and which when brought together in one document helps provide a broader picture of the economy.
Afghanistan Statistical Yearbook consists of fifteen section: i) overview ii) population iii) employment iv) education; v) health; vi) environment; vii) national accounts; viii) agriculture; ix) industry; x) services; xi) prices and exchange rates; xii) balance of payments and foreign trade; xiii) monetary indicators; xiv) public finance; and xv) foreign aid flows; the sections show the interplay of a wide range of issues: macroeconomic performance, private sector development, international aid flows, and human capital development.
For the first time English has been included in Afghanistan Statistical Yearbook. The data series are not exhaustive. Hence comments that would assist us for future improvement would be welcome from you the users. The hope is that this data book will become one of the principal mechanisms by which we measure progress in poverty reduction and the improvement in the standard of living of the Afghan people.
Two years after the war ended, our economy has now recovered to about 75% its pre-war 1357 (1978) level. The stabilization phase is proceeding satisfactory. Subsequently, the government's policy is now moving away from emergency and humanitarian relief, to go beyond macroeconomic stabilization to sustainable economic development.
Our primary goal in this sustainable development is to reduce poverty across Afghan people through broad-base economic growth. Currently, we are in the progress of consolidating macroeconomic stability, addressing some of the structural problems of our economy, and most importantly, making it all relevant to the daily lives of ordinary people. We also are setting clear targets for food security, improving child and maternal mortality, expanding education opportunities and closing the gender gap.
I would like to thank the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for technical assistance and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) for financial support of the publication. I also would like to thank all the Ministries, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), World Bank and IMF for the data contribution, and many others who have made this unique product possible.

Abdul Rashid Fakhri
